Academics:

Research Interests:

Experimental/Behavioral Economics

Current Activities:

Teaching Assistant for one section of 22M:025

Graduate Student Senate, Graduate and Professional Student Senate (meets with UISG), and SABAC the financial committee of UISG.

For Spring 2004, I am trying to form a study group to go through Spivak's Calculus on Manifolds -- very useful for a wide variety of topics.  If you have ANY interest in joining the group, please drop me a note.

Also, the 4th Annual James F. Jakobsen Graduate Forum is coming up (I'm the Math/Science committee member, curry my favor!) and it looks like its going to be pretty big this year (over 100 submissions) so you should come by and check out the diverse presentations and meet some interesting people outside your department.

I am also currently running some paid Economics experiments -- if you have any interest in participating, please contact me.  Here is a recent copy of my proposal if you care to see what I’m up to.

Announcements:

Here is the Tentative Schedule.

My Mathlab hours this semester are 7-9 pm on Thursdays, if you want receive help from me personally.

I have an office hour at 2:30 on Thursdays in 269 McBride -- as it is probably easier to contact me via email, feel free to do so, or talk to me after class.

Congratulations to Bob who scored a perfect on our first quiz.  Although declining to entertain us with song and dance for his promised five minutes of fame, he did bring us yummy donuts.  Thanks, Bob.

Here is a solution for the problem from 2/19.  There is a problem at the end which will be collected 2/26 worth 5 points.  Make sure you read it and understand the result of the lemma.

There is a big assignment due after break – don’t wait till the last minute!  Then again, make sure you have a fun break.

The second quiz will likely be postponed until April 6th or so.  Also, April 5th may be in class review, depending on when the professor returns from a conference, in which case there will be a make-up for class on April 6th, and the quiz will likely be postponed until April 8th.

(3/29) Quiz is evidentially next week.  Also, thanks to Aaron who brought us pokey stix last Tuesday for his five minutes of fame.  Hoping someone will actually share something about themselves, but oh well.  Also, Homework #9 is too long in my opinion, so we will try to do lots of the problems in class.

(4/1) The quiz will be either next Monday or Tuesday depending on the professor’s schedule.  This means that you must attend Monday and possibly Tuesday.  Good luck!

(4/8) The second quiz results were not so hot.  Therefore, you can do the quiz as a take-home for up to an extra 5 points on the quiz.  You can get it here.  It will be collected 4/13.

(4/19) Homework #12 is long, but this way we can talk about it the Tuesday before it is due.  Good luck on the upcoming midterm!

(4/23) Well, all I can say about Midterm #2 is:

As a result, I will be offering some times outside of class where we will tackle some types of problems that you should really know out of Chap. 4, namely optimization.  I will also go over the midterm problems in an extra session.  They are of course optional, but the types of problems on the second midterm are likely to resurface on the final.

(5/05) An answer key for the practice test is here.  We will go over the test during finals week.  Study hard and good luck!

(5/14) Final grades are posted!  Questions, etc. please contact me at the usual address.  Thank you for being in my class!

Homework:

I will try to post homework as it is assigned, but it is your responsibility to keep up with assignments.  If you will be absent on a day homework is due, please turn in the homework to my mailbox in 15 McLean BEFORE the class it is due.  If for some reason that is not possible, please talk to me in class or send me email using the address above.

Bonus points for Quiz #2:

Quiz 2 Take-home

Please note!  There was a typo in the original quiz problem #3 – the answer is the same, but the equation given doesn’t make much sense with the initial conditions.  Sorry for not catching it earlier – I had a comprehensive exam and lacked the time for the usual quality control!  Think of a suitable punishment for me on Tuesday – the link above is now correct.  Will be collected 4/13

5/03 (Review p.431) 3, 14, 19, 20,30

Worth up to two extra credit points if handed in before the final.  (During review or in my mailbox.)

Additional Materials:

If you are having trouble viewing the lecture notes/handouts/etc. you can download Adobe Acrobat Reader from here, which will likely fix the problem.

If you are having trouble viewing the grades or the schedule and you are on a Windows based PC, you can download the free Excel viewer here.

Grades:

I will post quiz scores, etc. as time allows to give you some feedback on your grade.  Ultimately, grades will be determined at the end of the semester, so scores here are only a rough estimate of your current grade in the class.

Discussion Grades (Excel format)

(5/01)  As we will not have a third quiz, I have put the last quiz weight on homework and rescaled accordingly, making sure it benefited everyone.  Also, the last “proof” worksheet was made entirely extra credit.

Previous Courses:

22M:015 Sections A01, A04

Tutoring:

I have been an active tutor for the past four years, and I am always willing to take on students in the classes 22M:50 or 22M:55 or similar courses.  (Students currently in one of my discussion sections, please note that I am not allowed to tutor those classes -- you should see me during mathlab or office hours for free anyway.)  For a sample of the work I do with students, here is a solution I provided to one of my students in 22m:55 of a particularly tough problem she was assigned.  (Don't worry -- I explain things MUCH differently and informally in person -- I have a lot of repeat business.)

Note Spring 2004:  I am ineligible to tutor 22m:025 (Calc I) as I am currently a TA for that class.

Note 2/09:
If you are interested in tutoring for 22m:028 (Calc III) I am currently doing group tutoring on Mondays, 11:30-1:30.  Group tutoring is much cheaper than individualized tutoring so if you are interested, drop me a note.

Note 4/25:  Full on students until summer.

Fun:
If you're looking at this site, you probably have some extra time on your hands, so:

Play Findit which is similar to the picture match game you can find in bars.

Broke/bored? Make some money and have some fun investing on the Iowa Electronic Markets.  You'll need to take some money down to Pappajohn in order to open an account, though.

Lonely?  Try talking to your good friend Eliza.

Or you can always turn to Ping-Pong.  If you think those guys are good, check these out.

Or listen to a teenage anthem, acappella.
